Having the ability to identify an exceptional commercial idea then building it are only half of the equation. Velocity recognises that ‘the sell’ is as important as the ‘the build’ and so has been constructed with a strong emphasis on consumer understanding; who the consumer is, what makes them tick, is there an appetite for the solution presented?

Put simply: Velocity is about ensuring professional, highly motivated and capable teams are assembled to bring each business idea to life – but strictly on the basis of a proven demand for the concept.

WHAT’S A GOOD IDEA?

When Decca turned down The Beatles in 1962, in favour of Brian Pool and the Tremeloes – they weren’t to know that they had turned down the best idea since Hobart’s Funnies. And whilst Velocity would never be so arrogant as to claim that they know ‘beyond a shadow’ the difference between the next Facebook and the next Boo.com, there are some processes beyond simple intuition that can increase chances of success.

USEFULNESS

What issue does it solve or invaluable service does it provide for consumers?

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention, but having the ‘best idea since sliced bread’ doesn’t necessarily guarantee success of course. For an idea to succeed, the right team, financial structure, advice, processes and (that most important ingredient of all) an unwavering determination to make it happen are required. Velocity’s founders have decades of collective experience in taking projects from seed to success and it’s this knowledge that guides their decision making: Velocity will only engage with projects where it is confident that its financial, business, creative, brand/marketing, moral support will make a meaningful difference. Fundamentally, Velocity will only engage with business ideas for which it feels it can provide a genuine chance of success.

INVENTIVENESS

Is it an innovative idea? Or does it reinvent an entire sector?

Creativity or inventiveness is a precious commodity. Industry thrives on the brilliant, left-field notions created by the ‘crazy ones’; but having an interesting idea is one thing, solving a specific problem creatively is quite another. With its roots firmly in the creative industry, Velocity has the expertise to recognise brilliant but relevant thinking and uses its advisory panel as an additional filter before pursuing an idea on behalf of its investors.
